Francesca Franchina, MS Ed. talks with Susan Ferguson, Director of The University of Dayton Center for Catholic Education and Jacinta Mergler, Director of the Lalanne Program an innovative approach to Catholic Education regarding teacher education/formation. The Lalanne Program is a post graduate, teacher service program that places beginning teachers in urban Catholic schools to teach for two years. During their two year commitment a group of Lalanne teachers live together, pray together and experience a developing Catholic Community. They experience a common bond as they teach in participating Catholic schools and attend graduate courses at the University of Dayton School of Education in the second summer session. Young teachers compare teaching notes and experiences in the program, sharing faith, meals, chores, recreation and social times while experiencing visits and guidance from experienced UD mentors. Lalanne serves Catholic schools in Dayton, Cincinnati and Cleveland, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Lansing and Flint, MI. Lalanne is a service-teaching program administered by the University of Dayton, which young teachers credit with honing their Catholic spiritual outlook as well as honing teaching skills. Upcoming Francesca and Friends continue the discussion with CCE Director Susan Ferguson on other facets of this growing program in Catholic Education provided by the Center for Catholic Education at University of Dayton on Francesca and Friends: January 15/22, 2014; February 12/19 2014 and March 12/26th. Bl. Wm. Joseph Chaminade, Founder of The Society of Mary (Marianists) was a holy, gutsy, innovative, highly creative Catholic priest, who was exiled to Saragossa, Spain during the French Revolution. The only title he would accept was Apostolic Missionary whose mission related to him by the Blessed Mother was to rebuild the Catholic Church in France after the French Revolution. Chaminade accomplished this by creating solid experiences in developing small communities of men and women. “Evangelization Through Education” was his mottoand sharing bona fide authentic Catholic experiences. When he returned to France, Blessed Chaminade focused on being an evangelizer of young people, educator, community organizer, developer and builder…what we would dub today as a really forward thinking shaker and mover! His work carries on in Marianist Schools, Universities, Parishes and The Family of Mary Apostolate throughout the world under the Mantle of the Blessed Mother, Maria Duce, bringing souls to Jesus!
“Marianists who teach witness to a life enriched with both human and Christian values. They fulfill their mission by the professional quality and Christian character of all their teaching.” —Marianist Rule of Life
