The “Kerygma” is the initial and essential proclamation of the Gospel. As evangelizers we must know the “kerygma” if we are going to effectively communicate it to others. Unfortunately, for many Catholics the kerygma remains an enigma. In this episode we will explore the various elements of the kerygma and it’s meaning with a view to sharing it with others.
All Christians are called to evangelize and give witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is a most basic and fundamental duty of the entire People of God. Yet how exactly are we to go about it? What does it mean to “give witness” to the Gospel? Is it about “words” or “deeds”? In this episode we will be exploring the Church’s teaching regarding the type of witness that all Christians are called to give.
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” These are the parting words of Jesus to his disciples before His glorious Ascension, words that describe the anointing that they would receive on Pentecost, which would embolden and empower them to evangelize the world. Every baptized and Confirmed Catholic receives this same outpouring of the Holy Spirit along with His spiritual gifts and charisms. These gifts are to be used for the building up of the Body of Christ and for the advancement of the Kingdom. Yet unfortunately for many believers these gifts remain largely dormant and undiscovered. In this episode we will explore the role of the Holy Spirit in evangelization and the importance of the spiritual gifts.
Picking up from where we left off from the previous episode, we will continue to explore the many reasons/excuses (what I call Evange-lies and Misconcep-tions) that Catholics use to justify their failure to evangelize and will seek to counter these with the Church’s authentic teaching on Evangelization as found in the Scriptures, the New Catechism, the documents of the Second Vatican Council and Papal documents.
