Ken talks with Dr. Anne Hendershott about “Renewal: How a New Generation of Faithful Priests and Bishops is Revitalizing the Catholic Church” (Encounter Books) In the wake of the clergy abuse scandal of the last decade, many media commentators predicted the “end” of the Catholic priesthood. Demands for an end to celibacy, coupled with calls for women’s ordination, dominated discussions on the effectiveness of the Catholic Church in America. “Renewal” argues that the aging generation of progressives that continues to lobby Church leaders to change Catholic teachings on reproductive rights, same-sex marriage, and women’s ordination is being replaced by younger men and women who are attracted to the Church because of the very timelessness of its teachings. Ken talks with Fr Mitch Pacwa about “Growing In Faith: A Bible Study Guide for Catholics” (Our Sunday Visitor) and James Tonkowich “The Liberty Threat: The Attack on Religious Freedom In America Today” (Saint Benedict Press) Fr. Pacwa’s book is the latest volume of his Bible study series, and gives readers the insightful addition of Pope Francis’ views and teachings. The study, ideal for parish group or individual use, includes an easy-to-understand overview of each faith topic, background information, inspiring quotes from saints and others, and the option to personalize a topic through individualized study. The original publication of this study, “The Year of Faith: A Bible Study Guide for Catholics”, released in late 2012 for Pope Benedict XVI’s Year of Faith (2013), was one of the most popular Bible studies ever introduced by the prolific Jesuit priest and Biblical scholar. Fr Pacwa’s book can be purchased at: www.osv.com To learn more about Fr Pacwa visit: www.FatherMitchPacwa.org
James Tonkowich explores the history of Christian philosophy from the Church’s infancy through the birth of America and how it influenced religious liberty. Americans are losing what are supposed to be constitutionally promised rights at an alarming pace. The Founding Fathers understood the overriding essentiality of religious practice unimpeded by governmental authority, but time and vast cultural change has eroded this from the consciences of modern politicians. As we watch America teeter ever closer to the brink of moral collapse and prejudice towards religion become ever more institutionalized, one question always surfaces: How can we stop this? Ken talks with Christian Smith author of “Young Catholic America: Emerging Adults In, Out of, and Gone From the Church” (Oxford University Press) There is a growing crisis among young Catholics in the Church because young Catholics today are not looking to the Church as they form their identities, and fewer of them can even explain what it means to be Catholic and why it matters. Christian Smith offers insight into the religious practices and beliefs among young Catholics today, the early influences and events that lead them to embrace the Church or abandon it, and how being Catholic affects them as they become full-fledged adults. Dr. Smith’s book can be purchased at: www.amazon.com

Russell Shaw is working on book number 22. His writing spans 50 years of focusing on the Catholic Church, primarily in the United States. American Church:The Remarkable Rise, Meteoric Fall, and Uncertain Future of Catholicism in America is his mini-history of the immediate past Century of Catholicism.
He hypothesizes about the benefits that accrued to Catholics as they were gradually melded into the predominantly Protestant American scenery. Did Catholics retain their identity or absorb a Protestant one? What was the “Elephant in the Living Room” that tipped the scales away from Catholics being a “sign of contradiction” to being a common secular American.
“Russell Shaw has lived his own life of Christian witness with uncommon integrity, humility, and keen intelligence. His skill animates every page of American Church. He has captured the story of the Church in the United States with honesty and love, and it’s a privilege to call him my friend.” + Charles J. Chaput, O. F. M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia.
“Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams apparently took his own life, law enforcement officials said.”
The world of entertainment was shocked by this posting three weeks ago. Interest in suicide quickly became super high. It seemed that every news program and talk show was talking about Robin Williams, his acting career, his personal life, and how/why he committed suicide.
Debbie is a personal friend, but I did not know of this part of her life. I know her as a wife, mother, and grandmother who is totally committed to life–living her own to the max, deeply in love with her family, and completely dedicated to ending abortion and creating a Culture of Life, especially in southwestern Ohio.
So, I was taken aback when she called and offered to tell her story on Radio Maria’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”. I had to ask myself if this was a good topic for this program. I believe it is, if for no other reason than on average over 100 people kill themselves every day in the USA. There are Suicide Prevention Resources like the Hotline—> 800-273-8255 and web sites with stories and educational resources.
Another reason this topic is timely is the steady push for “assisted suicide” legislation and the sanctioning of medical insurance coverage for “end-of-life counseling”.
I was in Chicago for the Catholic Marketing Network Trade Show. By coincidence, directly across the aisle from my One More Soul display was author “JD” giving away free copies of his new book Drafted To Serve. Drafted . . . is a book about miracles–not the typical physical healing miracles that drive the canonization process. No, these”miracles” COULD be degraded to mere “coincidences” were they not so astonishing and so common. They are a result of JD being financially strapped and desperate to capitalize on Pope John Paul II’s World Youth Day VIII visit to Denver 21 years ago. JD was quite regularly in hopeless situations, praying for JP II for help–and getting it.
I was at WYD VIII with my friend Jim Vititow and 7 young people. It was an incredible “pilgrimage” that Drafted To Serve gave me an opportunity to relive . John Paul II coined the phrases “Culture of Life” and “Culture of Death” and popularized their use (as in this program’s title “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”). Who would deny JPII’s impact in leading us to a Culture of Life–a still elusive fact, but a victory guaranteed by a faithful God. I’m thinking especially of his Gospel of Life and Theology of the Body.
JD is a Colorado native, married with two sons, a service disabled Vietnam War veteran, having served five tours on swift boats. He graduated from the University of Denver with a dual degree in finance and real estate and currently owns a nationwide business in Denver. Drafted To Serve is his first book, written during three years of nearly full-time effort, which he felt compelled to complete in order to tell the world what happened when Pope John Paul II came to Denver in 1993.
JD and his buddy TP originally agreed to tell no one but the Catholic Church of the events that had taken place. They felt that due to the incredible nature of the story neither wished to step into the spotlight and have their lives turned upside down by the attention the story was certain to generate.
Not very long ago, virtually all people and religions considered same-sex attraction as “disordered” and same-gender sexual activity as disgusting, unlawful, and intrinsically evil. But today, numerous polls indicate that most Americans, including many Catholics, now support same-sex “marriage”.
Where has the “gay rights” movement come from, and how has it so easily (and successfully) conquered America? Robert Reilly believes the answers are in the dynamics of rationalizing sexual misbehavior. He makes his case in Making Gay Okay, How Rationalizing Homosexual Behavior is Changing Everything.
Rationalization or justification, or making to appear normal, is not new to our culture. Consider the rationalization of birth control, abortion, divorce, and co-habitation, to name but a few behaviors now considered normal, but not long ago were shameful.
American institutions–courts, armed forces, schools, Boy Scouts, foreign policy–have fallen in line to accept homosexuality as normal and the behavior as acceptable. What more can we expect? What can be done to stop this assault on decency and common sense. I pray that Robert has some answers for us.
We have multiple Guests to share their part in “Have A Heart For The Next Generation” — local adults and young people who have a heart for preborn children and want to learn how to stop the killing of their younger brothers and sisters in the Lord. From Dayton, we are expecting Paul Coudron from Dayton Right to Life, Ryan Mahle and Katie Pfeifer, Archbishop Altar HS, and hopefully Bob and Vivian Skovgard
We will also have those from outside the Dayton community who are here to lead the event–Wendy Wright and the Scott and Kathy Heldreth family of 8 children who have traveled all the way from Texas to help educate and train the Dayton “young” and “young at heart”. Wendy is a veteran pro-life leader who “went from Bible College to jail to invitations to the White House”. She is VP of C-FAM (they monitor the often anti-life/family activities at the UN) and a former president of Concerned Women for America.
I am very eager to learn more about “Have A Heart . . .” and these totally committed people who are making a commitment to the culture of life in Dayton.
Last week, in the midst of the Fortnight For Freedom events, University of Dayton History Professor Michael Carter made an excellent presentation at St Charles Borromeo Church in Kettering Ohio. I asked him to share his “History of Religious Freedom and Catholicism” lecture with the Radio Maria listeners on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” Tuesday the 8th at Noon ET. He graciously accepted. As we continue our quest for government’s acknowledgement of our right to religious freedom, including the right to act and behave in public according to our beliefs, it is good to take a look back into our history to see if our religious liberty has ever been under such severe attack. I asked Professor Mike what was the situation in the 13 colonies regarding religious freedom? What role did Catholics play in the founding of our country? Compare with the present day attacks on religious freedom by or own government.
Robert Muckle is one of those long-time Pro-Life warriors that will be in the battle until we win or he goes to heaven. He has served CT Right to Life Corp for almost 40 years, holding offices and organizing the annual Waterbury bus to the March for Life all of that time.
Connecticut has played an important role in the effort to keep contraception illegal and thus slowing the march toward legalized abortion. Eventually it was the legal tangles in CT over their Comstock Laws that paved the way for Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton. It seems ironic that efforts to prevent contraceptive access would eventually provide the “privacy” legal arguments that would lead to the legalization of abortion on demand throughout the US.
On June 21st Waterbury Catholics (and hopefully others) will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of closing the Waterbury Birth Control Clinic on June 19th, 1939. How will they celebrate? What does this celebration portend for the future of the Catholic Church in America? Has America’s culture of death reached its zenith?
Americans United for Life (AUL) develops and particularizes pro-life state legislation that protects women and their children as much as possible. AUL attorneys are very creative and finding new arguments that reduce the abortion industry in America, and to some degree around the world.
As AUL’s Vice President of Government Affairs, Dan McConchie leads these efforts with great passion and conviction. He was quoted in a recent interview, “Rubio Is Right: Life Does Begin At Conception,” and “It is an undisputed fact that a new human life begins when a sperm fertilizes an egg. Every single embryology textbook says the same thing, and has done so for over 100 years. Despite the left’s wishes to the contrary, this isn’t going to change any time soon, precisely because the science is settled.”
Dan’s compassion is contagious to the point that state legislatures compete for AUL ranking as the most pro-life state. If a state losses a notch in the AUL rankings, the legislators are on Dan’s door-step asking what they need to do to reestablish (or surpass) their prior ranking. Ohio just makes the top third at number 17.
Ken talks with Collin Raye – A Voice UnDefeated and Michael Nicholas Richard – Tobit’s Dog (both by Ignatius Press)

I am very excited to be having Bishop Morlino as our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” this week. Bishop Morlino is only the 4th bishop of Madison, it being a fairly young (68 years) diocese comprising 11 counties in SW Wisconsin.
Bishop Morlino has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Philosophy, and a doctorate in Moral Theology with specialization in fundamental moral theology and bioethics. His education and training have been steeped in the Jesuit tradition which often means a life-time in academia. Since 2005, Bishop Morlino has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) which conducts research, consultation, publishing and education to promote human dignity in health care and the life sciences.
As a Jesuit Bishop Morlino has a special kinship with Pope Francis. As you may already know, Pope Francis has called an Extra Ordinary Synod on the family for October 2014 to address the many challenges families face today, and how the Church can better respond to those challenges. The Diocese of Madison has taken the Pope’s questions from the Synod Preparatory Document very seriously by seeking answers to these questions from a great variety of Catholics.
Bishop Morlino is very grateful to God for having 32 seminarians, which is outstanding for a diocese of 277,000 Catholics and 139 parishes.
I really enjoy interviewing bishops. I am always in awe of their position as Vicar of Christ for their dioceses and all the responsibilities that a bishop carries.
Ken talks with Robert Reilly Making Gay Okay: How Rationalizing Homosexual Behavior is Changing Everything (Ignatius Press) and Bert Ghezzi The Heart of Catholicism: Practicing the Everyday Habits that Shape Us
(Ave Maria Press) In his book, Robert Reilly asks: Why are Americans being forced to consider homosexual acts as morally acceptable? Why has the US Supreme Court accepted the validity of same-sex “marriage”, which, until a decade ago, was unheard of in the history of Western or any other civilization? Where has the “gay rights” movement come from, and how has it so easily conquered America? Bert Ghezzi, bestselling author and popular speaker, invites readers into his deep love for the Church. With great warmth and authenticity, he shows how foundational habits such as praying, studying scripture, serving others, celebrating sacraments, and learning from the saints remind us who we are as followers of Christ. Robert’s book is available at www.ignatius.com Bert’s book is available at: www.avemariapress.com Visit Bert’s website: bertghezzi.com In Bert Ghezzi’s book he has a link to a Spiritual Gifts Inventory check it out: sgi.churchdb.com
Is Jesus the ultimate example of masculinity–a leader, father, warrior, lover, and miracle worker? Fr John will make that case for us on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”, Tuesday at NOON, ET. We need masculine men to establish a Cuture of Life in the home, parish community and country. Are you man enough to make difference?
Father John Acrea is a retired priest of the Diocese of Des Moines Iowa. During his “active duty” he was the Vocations Director for the Des Moines Diocese and a Spiritual Director for seminarians at St John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St Thomas in St Paul Minnesota.
He is in demand as a speaker at men’s conferences–like the recent “Man-UP” event in Des Moines.
The typical male probably does not think of Jesus as his image of manliness, or masculinity. Men are more likely to think of a great athlete, a combat veteran, a hero or someone who has overcome great diversity and challenges to be a success in business. And it is true that these men are exhibiting some of the characteristics of masculinity, but Fr John would say that each and every one of us can be (and many already are) men of exceptional masculinity.
Are priests and bishops and popes “masculine”? Is going to the seminary similar to joining the Marines?
Ladies, don’t go away. Fr John says women have these same characteristics, but manifest them in different ways.
Peter will be our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” Tuesday NOON ET. He is President of Americans For Truth about Homosexuality (AFTAH), a non-partisan, non-profit group dedicated to exposing the homosexual-bisexual-transgender activist agendas. AFTAH is a counter to over a dozen national American “gay” groups with annual budgets ranging from just under $1 million to over $30 million working to advance an agenda which threatens to criminalize Christian opposition to behavior that most Americans believe is wrong.
LaBarbera has debated the top homosexual advocates while appearing on hundreds of TV and radio news programs, including FOX’s Hannity and Colmes, CNN’s “The Larry King Show” and CNN’s “Crossfire,” C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal,” National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” and Bill O’Reilly’s and Alan Colmes’ nationally syndicated radio programs. He has been quoted on homosexuality-related issues in newspapers across the nation, including The New York Times,Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, as well as by Associated Press and Reuters.
Peter will address Health Issues associated with homosexual behaviors and the question of whether same-sex-attraction (SSA) is a condition/disorder that people are born with or acquired. He will also examine the motives behind efforts to normalize SSA in our schools and culture. Are these often extreme tactics creating a back lash that will eventually bring these efforts down?
Katherine Ginkel has a unique job as educator of St Jude Hospice staff personnel on the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) for Catholic Health Care Workers. These Directives were developed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops to set a standard of care that is to be expected by all Catholic health care institutions and their employees and associates. These ERDs are periodically updated to reflect the ever changing threats to the dignified treatment and care of those who are in need of care in clinics, hospitals and in all critical and end-of-life care situations. For example, the ERDs absolutely forbid abortion and euthanasia.
The hospice industry is not always respectful of the dignity of human persons and their right to a natural death. Hospice care can be on opportunity for euthanasia as we reported in one of last year’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” programs. The vocabulary now includes the phrase “stealth euthanasia” to describe the over dosing of pain medications to cause death.
St Jude Hospice was started by Tom Moreland as an authentically Catholic (loyal to Church teaching as reflected in the ERDs) alternative to secular hospice. In 2008, Tom started Saint Jude Healthcare, which eventually became the parent to Saint Jude Hospice and Spirit Homecare. Tom managed or owned hospices from Ohio to Mississippi, and Minnesota to California. There are now 13 St Jude Hospice locations in Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Tom has requests from several bishops to open new locations in their dioceses.
Kevin McCarthy will be our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” on Tuesday the 25th. Kevin was our Guest on January 7th speaking about Our Lady of America, the Immaculate Virgin. That talk is archived at radiomaria.us. The Federal Court trial he spoke of back then is finished with a very favorable outcome that still awaits some final statements by Judge William Lawrence.
Kevin is a secular lawyer and canon lawyer with a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Angelicum in Rome. He will be speaking with us on Tuesday at Noon ET about the Annunciation and Incarnation of Jesus–the most awesome event in human history. The Annunciation event is not given much attention in the USA, but is a Holyday of Obligation in some countries.
Whenever we say the Hail Mary, and as part of the Angelus, we repeat the words of the Angel Gabriel’s Announcement to Mary that she would bear the Savior in her womb. Did she realize then that she would nurse Him as an infant/toddler, and then nurture and accompany Him through the 33 years of His earthly life? She was Jesus’ most faithful disciple, even with Him at his cruel death on a cross, and burial. She surely understood that her
Son would rise from the dead on the third day. I wonder if she was waiting at the tomb with new garments and some food. Scripture does not say.
Please join us in celebrating the Annunciation and Incarnation of Jesus, at your local parish and on Radio Maria’s “The Quest for a culture of Life in America”. If you are near Dayton, meet us at St Anthony Church or Emmanuel Church–see the accompanying flier.
Our study of Marian apparitions continues with this week’s Guest, Dan Lynch, founder of Dan Lynch Apostolates, promoting devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Our Lady of America, Jesus King of All Nations, and Blessed John Paul II. Dan travels throughout the states presenting missions, promoting and conducting Image Visitations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Our Lady of America. He and Sue live in Vermont; they have nine children and 20 grandchildren.
Today, we want primarily to learn more about Our Lady of America, the Immaculate Virgin. Dan’s book, Our Lady of America, Hope for the States is an excellent summary of information about Our Lady of America, the seer Sister Mary Ephrem (later Mildred Neuzil), Our Lady’s statue, medal, requests, and promises–including that more graces will be bestowed on the United States than all the graces from Lourdes and Fatima IF her wishes are granted!
Major ownership issues have slowed promotion of Our Lady of America. These legal issues have to do with copyright and trademarking of Our Lady of America devotional materials that resulted in an Indianapolis Federal Court trial from January 21st until the jury decision last week. The Final Judgment by Judge William T. Lawrence is expected any day. Kevin McCarthy is one of the plaintiffs (with Al Langsenkamp) in that case. Kevin was our Guest on January 7th (http://radiomaria.us/questforlife).
Please join us Tuesday the 18th at NOON ET to learn more about Our Lady of America–one of only two approved Marian apparitions in the United States: Our Lady of America in Ohio, and Our Lady of Good Help near Green Bay Wisconsin. You can listen on air or on line at radiomaria.us .
Blessings to you and your families as we are only one week away from the Solemnity of the Annunciation and Incarnation of Jesus on March 25th. Please plan special celebrations of this most awesome event in all human history–God becoming Man. Take the family to Mass and dinner. Take a day off from your usual activities to pray, do Eucharistic Adoration, participate in 40 Days for Life, and meditate on the significance of the divination of humanity and the humanizing of divinity.
Please join us again this week with Fr Apostoli as we continue last week’s very interesting program about Our Lady of Fatima’s warnings and promises, specifically that Russia would be converted and there would be a period of peace in the world.
After Pope Blessed John Paul II completed the consecration in 1984, as Mary had requested in her appearance to Lucia in 1929, it did seem that great changes were taking place in Russia, including the complete abandonment of Communism, and a renewed receptivity to religion. And more recently, President Putin has been reducing access to abortion, eliminating promotion of homosexuality, and encouraging women to have children. Are Russian designs on the Ukraine a step backward? Did Mary change her mind?
This week we will focus on the Fatima story, the lives of the three children Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. What were they like? Was their life idyllic or difficult? What kind of sufferings did they experience and what was their attitude toward suffering? What of Mary’s messages is still applicable to us in 21st Century America?
The children were shown a vision of Hell which affected them deeply. Should we take heed or trust in the mercy of God?
Also, this week a miracle has been accepted as due to the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, which will advance the cause for his canonization. Father Apostoli is vice-postulator for Archbishop Sheen so Father must be very pleased that his work is bearing fruit. I’ll ask him about that.
We are very blessed to have Fr. Andrew Apostoli, C.F.R., as our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” this Tuesday March 4th at NOON ET.
Fr Andrew is the author of Fatima For Today, The Urgent Marian Message of Hope. We will be mostly talking about this book. I must confess that I was really skeptical about what Our Lady of Fatima could say that might be relevant to today. But once I started reading Fatima for Today, I could not put it down. I certainly was familiar with much of the Fatima account of Mary appearing to three Portuguese young children, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta in 1917, but Fr Apostoli puts it all together in one place and adds MANY details that I was not aware of. His introductory chapter contrasting Mary the New Eve with the original Eve is by itself worth the modest price of this book, which I downloaded from Ignatius Press and am reading on my computer.
Questions I have for Fr Andrew: Has the consecration of Russia to Mary’s Immaculate Heart been accomplished? Why has it taken so long? Is there evidence of Russia’s promised conversion? What about Crimea and the Ukraine? How did the children suffer? Why pray the Rosary?
Father Apostoli is a founding member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, and he has been teaching and preaching retreats and parish missions for several decades. He is considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the apparitions at Fatima and he has authored numerous books, including Following Mary to Jesus and Walk Humbly With Your God. Fr. Apostoli is the vice-postulator for the cause for the canonization of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, and a frequent host on EWTN television, where he hosted the TV special “Our Lady of Fatima and the First Saturday Devotion”.
Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, Author of No Turning Back: A Witness to Mercy says this: “Learn, live, and spread the message of Fatima! This is the express desire of Pope Benedict XVI. And Pope John Paul II once stated that the message of Fatima was more important now than in 1917!” That is why this wonderful book on Fatima is so important. Fr. Apostoli has recaptured this heavenly message of urgency and hope for a new generation. Our world needs the message of Fatima more than ever, and I pray that many people are brought back to Jesus, Mary, and the Church through these pages.
Host Kathleen Beckman dialogues with Dr. Brian Kelly regarding his vantage point of educating Catholic university students; the difference they are making in transforming the culture by exemplifying Catholic values in the public square. Dr. Kelly also shares his personal journey that led to his involvement with one of the foremost, growing Catholic colleges in America. They discuss the great life and influence of the college’s patron, Saint Thomas Aquinas, doctor of the Church, whose feast day the Church celebrates January 28.
Wednesday, 22 January 2014, marks the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe vs Wade and Doe vs Bolton decisions legalizing the killing of pre-born children in America. Trent Horn is an appropriate Guest for this week’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” program.
Trent holds a Master’s degree in Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville and is currently an apologist and speaker for Catholic Answers. He specializes in training pro-lifers to intelligently and compassionately engage pro-choice advocates in genuine dialogue. He is the author of Answering Atheism and Making the Case for Life (DVD), both published by Catholic Answers.
Making the Case for Life is a very valuable teaching tool for transforming any abortion debate into a fruitful conversation–one that opens minds and hearts to the humanity of the pre-born child while maintaining a non-confrontational environment. Trent’s approach has been developed by refining ideas of seasoned pro-life leaders and applying them with hundreds of college students.
The triennial meeting of the MWIA, Medical Women’s International Association, an organization started in 1919, was held three weeks ago in Seoul, Korea. Three AAPLOG (America Assn of Pro-Life Obstetricians & Gynecologists) women were scheduled presenters. Drs Donna Harrison, Mary Davenport, both ObGyns, and Dr. Martha Shuping, a psychiatrist flew to Seoul for the meeting, but at the last moment, they were informed their sessions would be cancelled. Why? Their presentations were cancelled because they did not support the pro-abortion ideology of the meeting’s organizers.
What happened next was quite astonishing. Be sure to listen–at radio maria.us –as Dr Mary will be our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” Tuesday at Noon ET.
She will describe her personal conversions to NFP-Only, Natural Procreative Technology, and the the Roman Catholic faith. She is the immediate past president of AAPLOG and can tell us about that organization.
But, we mainly want to hear how the Holy Spirit orchestrated the banning of their presentations to a small group of MWIA attendees so that their message could be heard all over the world. Lesson #1: The Holy Spirit will take the ball and run with it if allowed in the game. So, do your part–listen to that small voice encouraging you to do something that will advance the Culture of Life.
Just do it; the Holy Spirit will do most of the actual work!
Mary will synopsize the three presentations; all addressed the harm caused to women by abortion:
Donna Harrison’s presentation demonstrated that nations with laws protective of mothers and unborn babies have excellent maternal mortality statistics. Ireland is a classic example
Mary Davenport had a talk about abortion as a risk factor for pre-term birth, the cause of 15 million neonatal deaths each year internationally. Mary travels extensively to gather data and present the facts of abortions harm.
Martha Shuping had a presentation that included two case reports of women who suffered severe psychological harm from abortion, even though they had obvious risk factors that were not discussed in the informed consent process.
Alan Parker is the attorney president of San Antonio based The Justice Foundation (TJF) offering free legal representation to those whose fundamental freedoms and rights are being threatened. He serves as the lead legal counsel for Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe” of Roe vs Wade) and Sandra Cano (“Mary Doe” of Doe vs Bolton) and is advancing the Culture of Life in America in a variety of ways, including fighting for parents rights in the education of their children.
TJF’s “Center Against Forced Abortion” offers letters to parents, fathers, and abortionists to discourage forcing or coercing girls into having an abortion. These have saved thousands of lives and can be used by you to give to a minor girl, her parents, teachers/counselors/pastors or anyone who may try to convince her to abort. She alone has the right to choose; that’s the law. The letters are available at www.TheJusticeFoundation.org.
I also expect to ask Alan about the future of abortion in America. With tougher restrictions becoming increasingly common, we are seeing more abortion facilities close each month. Are we really winning the fight for LIFE?
Another TJF project is collecting the testimonies of aborted women who wish they had NOT aborted their son or daughter. These powerful human stories are being used to convince legislators and voters that abortion should not be an option because it causes depression, grief, regret, suicide, and severe health problems for the mothers–and of course, killS their children.
Guest Host, Annie Karto, dialogues with Joan and David Maroney, Directors of “Mother of Mercy Messengers”, about “Divine Mercy for America”, an outreach program of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception wherein people of faith engage in praying for mercy upon our country as did St. Faustina for her country, Poland.
Ronda Chervin, PhD, is a professor of Philosophy, a prolific writer, a widow, and frequent guest on EWTN Radio–and elsewhere. If you read her works you will be blessed and inspired to share her wisdom–and by so doing, you will be promoting a Culture of Life in America.
Please join Jeff and Kristina, and several Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust on Radio Maria’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”.
You may ask, “Who are the ‘Survivors of . . . ‘?” Some new TV adventure program, where your comrades evict you every week? NOT!
Survivors are anyone born since Roe vs Wade made abortion legal in every state, at any age, for any reason. The particular Survivors we will be chatting with have either been through a “pro-life boot camp” or are in the current “camp” in southern California. These are young adults 14-29 who have paid almost $500 to be immersed in the pro-life movement with two-solid weeks of seminars and activism. They graduate with the energy, enthusiasm, commitment, knowledge, and experience to be the pro-life leaders in our communities for years to come.
We are honored today to have another great veteran front-line pro-lifer as our Guest on the Quest–“The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”. Chris Slattery is the Founder and President of Expectant Mother Care Frontline Pregnancy Centers (EMC) in America’s most hostile environment for pre-born babies.
NYC has the highest abortion rate in America–60%, if I recall correctly. EMC operates 12 pregnancy resource centers in four NYC boroughs, including 6 in the Bronx, of which one is a mobile unit with ultrasound. Since beginning in 1985, EMC has saved at least 44,000 babies from abortion and counseled over 125,000 women.
Chris has an established Pro-Life Internship that trains and engages people in the EMC ministry in NYC and expands EMC into other cities and states.
What will we learn from our program today that can motivate us to join the battle for a Culture of Life?
Eagle Scout and Scout Leader Edward Szymkowiak discusses the crisis in the Boy Scouts of America and their new policy of accepting homosexual scouts.
Steven Ertelt’s pro-life credentials run deep–National Right to Life Committee,Students for Life of America, Indiana Right to Life, Montana Right to Life and Colorado Citizens for Life. In 1993, he founded LifeNews to provide timely internet news of interest to a rapidly growing pro-life community.
Please join Steven and Steve (me) to learn what the latest developments are in a rapidly changing culture dominated by government attacks on life, family, religion, privacy, health and marriage. How can we respond? Isn’t government supposed to serve the people?
On June 6th Ken talks with guests Russell Shaw American Church – the Remarkable Rise, Meteoric Fall, and Uncertain Future of Catholicism in America (Ignatius Press) and David Calvillo Real Men Pray the Rosary – A Practical Guide to a Powerful Prayer (Ave Maria Press) Russell Shaw asks if the “Americanization” of American Catholics-their cultural assimilation, has been a blessing or a curse for the Church in the United States? Or has it been a bit of both? Cultural assimilation has undoubtedly conferred many benefits on Catholics. Their absorption into the secular culture of America, however, now threatens the Catholic identity of millions of faithful and of their institutions, such as schools, universities, and hospitals. His book is available at: www.ignatius.com
Ken’s second guest David N. Calvillo says that the Rosary isn’t just for “old ladies and funerals,” that it’s a powerful tool for men as well. Praying the Rosary “enables one to see our Lord and experience our Christian faith through Mary’s eyes.” David’s book is available at: www.avemariapress.com To find out more about his organization visit: http://realmenpraytherosary.org/
We are living in exciting times for the Culture of Life in America as we are seeing the abortion industry crumbling right before our eyes. Abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s conviction of murdering newborns and his sentence to life in prison without possibility of parole happened in large part because of the testimony of his own employees. That fact must be sending shivers up the spines of many abortionists.
His trial has also focused a very bright light on the abortion business, raising fundamental questions about the disjointed logic that allows an almost born infant to be killed with impunity, while holding a just born infant’s murder as murder. It’s all about location, location, location.
Kate Bryan is deep into “Live Action”–an organization that stings abortionists by visiting them, asking common sense questions, and secretly videotaping the ensuing Q&A! Live Action sting operations have placed Planned Parenthood in the sex-trafficking business and willing to abort babies because they were the “wrong” gender. Live Action is bringing the Culture of Life to America.

Our Guest on “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” two weeks ago was Dr Jay Boyd who has blogged about Natural Family Planning (NFP) for over a year at “Philothea on Phire”—–http://philotheaonphire.blogspot.com/. She and some of her blog friends have raised serious questions about the teaching, use, and advocacy of NFP. Those who are deeply committed to NFP did not like much of what she had to say. You may listen to that program at http://radiomaria.us/questforlife/. Based on her blog, Dr Jay has composed a book, Natural Family Planning: Trojan Horse in the Catholic Bedroom?
I and One More Soul have been strong promoters of NFP for well over a decade, so some listeners have expressed surprise and disappointment in my giving Dr Boyd a platform. My response is three fold: 1) I am always looking for the Truth (that comes from God who is love, beauty, goodness and truth); 2) NFP is good, but maybe there is something even better; and 3) our Guest today–Kim Cole–will share her experience of the good fruits of NFP.
Kim has taught the Billings Method of NFP for over 17 years, first in Redding CA, and for the past 10+ years in the Phoenix Diocese. She has taught over 100 couples in a great variety of situations and will attest to the dramatic changes for the better that NFP has caused for these couples.
She and her couples are very blessed to be in the Diocese of Phoenix which requires couples being prepared for marriage to receive a thorough NFP course. Some priests are requiring couples going through RCIA to complete the same course. You will be amazed by her stories and the statistics she can cite for the parish where she has taught for many years.

On this day, I am humbled and very pleased to have Fr Frank Pavone as our Guest on Radio Maria’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America”. Fr Frank is the National Director of Priests for Life, which he (and God) BUILT to be arguably the largest and most effective pro-life organization in the US, and therefore the world. Priests for Life has strongly supported our bishops in the on-going battle for religious freedom that will continue after this election, no matter the outcome.
Steve’s guest on this episode of “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” is Dr Paul Byrne, a pioneering neonatologist who developed the first successful ventilator for newborns. Dr Byrne is also an internationally recognized authority on definition of death who has challenged the use of “brain death” and organ transplantation. These are all topics discussed on this week’s program.

One More Soul has created a “newspaper” response to the HHS mandate titled “Obey Mandate or Scripture”. You can read it, print it, or order it at http://onemoresoul.com/news-commentary/obey-mandate-or-scripture.html#Order. The newspaper addresses the following 7 concerns: Religious Freedom, Right of Conscience, Assault on Catholic Church Teachings, Philosophical, Medical, Sociological, and Economic Concerns. Because it addresses the contraception, sterilization and abortion issues that are foundational to the HHS mandate, it will be a valuable teaching tool even if the mandate is not enforced. Please consider it as a resource for study in whatever group you may be part of.
Christendom College Professor of Economics William (Bill) Luckey wrote two articles on page 20 of the newspaper. He will by my Guest on the Quest for a Culture of Life in America on Today, at Noon Eastern Time. We will be talking about the Catholic Church view of economics, including private ownership, living wage, economic justice, and the economics of health care–winners and losers.

Steve’s guest on the Quest–“The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” is Father Ezra Sullivan, OP, STL, at the St Gertude Parish/Priory in Cincinnati. He is an authority on the Health and Human Services Mandate that will be our topic today. Please tune in and alert your friends by phone and email.
Steve Koob’s Guest for this program is Dr. Charles Kenney, PhD, founder and president of “The Right Brain People”. He was our Guest on the Quest two weeks ago when he described how he has used his research on the brain (left side reasoning, right side emotioning) to help over 400 of America’s most successful companies market their image and products. He has also applied these same skills to help the pro-life movement convince abortion vulnerable women to choose life. He is fascinating!
Steve and Dr. Kenny talk about the HHS Mandate requiring all health insurance to cover contraception, sterilization and abortion. They delve into the now fully “evolved” same sex “marriage” issue. Dr. Kenny also discusses his ideas for effectively confronting both of these threats to a well ordered society and a Culture of Life.

What is spiritual warfare and what instruction have we been given by Jesus, and the Blessed Mother to use by the grace and lessons given us by God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit through Saints, Scripture and the Psalms? Last week Francesca and Dr. Doug Schoeninger,Ph. D. discussed personal healing attitudes and beliefs: “God loves me; I am marvelously made (Psalm 139); The Holy Spirit lives in me (Romans 8:26-28); Meditation on personal healing (Phillipians 4: 6-9); The importance of safety and an Attitude of Gratitude. How can we relate these points to healing America and the world situation in a way that promotes healing for self and receiving God’s healing love to heal the wounds of the world?
Michael Duricy speaks about the Mariological Society of America.
