Outside of the words of the Mass, few sacred texts have been set to music as often as the Magnificat, the Canticle of Mary. These beautiful words of Our Lady from the Gospel of Saint Luke have inspired composers for hundreds of years, right up to our own time. This program will feature different musical settings of the Magnificat in Latin and in English from different historical eras, all programmed to honor Our Lady on the Feast of her Nativity.
In this program, Mark and Frances discuss the prayer fo the Church, or the Liturgy of the Hours. They discuss a little about the history of the prayer, the different elements of the prayer, how it is prayed by the entire Church and some of the benefits of praying this prayer. They cover some of the differnet options for getting copies of the prayers, including sources on-line, and they also talk about the differences of praying this prayer in community or privately. This is a wonderful introduction to this most import form of “praying without ceasing.”
In this program, Mary’s Canticle of Joy is discussed by Father Thomas A. Thompson, S.M.

With Thanksgiving in mind, Lynn Bauman presents various interpretations of the classic hymn, Te Deum (Thee, O God, we praise).
Te Deum has been in regular use in the Roman Catholic Church for centuries in the Office of Readings found in the Liturgy of the Hours, and in thanksgiving to God for a special blessing such as the election of a pope, the consecration of a bishop, the canonization of a saint, a religious profession, the publication of a treaty of peace, a royal coronation, etc. It is sung either after Mass or the Divine Office or as a separate religious ceremony.
