Anne and her husband gave it back to God! They gave back to the Creator the decision, power and authority that He gives by way of Natural Family Planning (NFP). AND, God generously reciprocated by giving them 10 beautiful children and 34 born grandchildren–17 of each gender, with an unspecified tie-breaker en-route! Praise the Lord from whom all Supreme Blessings flow.
AND, 90% of this large family gets together a couple times per month because they are all within a 30 mile diameter circle. I can only imagine the fun and vitality that all these cousins enjoy together?
Anne gives Fr John Hardon credit for coining Supernatural Family Planning, as well as the encouragement she needed to pursue her Masters Degree at the John Paul II Institute.
Anne does not condemn NFP. She suggests that SnFP is really a more accurate version of natural child spacing. Why? maybe because God created Nature. God and Nature are synonymous. NFP makes Man synonymous with Nature which suggests that Man is God.
That’s my version of how it all works. I’m eager to hear what Anne thinks about that–and much more.
I am on a pilgrimage this week-a pilgrimage visiting Schoenstatt Shrines in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and meeting the religious and laity who are the Schoenstatt Family. Sister Candice Fier is a Schoenstatt Movement Religious Sister. I was surprised to know of their large numbers and the variety of their ministries. Sister lives at the Sleepy Eye MN Shrine and Retreat Center, and serves the Diocese of New Ulm as Family Life Director. She is a Registered Nurse and Fertility Care Practitioner with an MS in Marriage and Family Life from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in WDC.
Today we will learn about Sr Candice-her origins, call to religious life, and the three prongs of her ministry:
Promotion of NFP and Natural Procreative Technology for healthy marriages and healthy women,
Marriage and Family Life projects in a large rural Midwestern diocese, and the
Schoenstatt movement mission and charisma based on a deep love of Mary.
Anne Cherney is the mother of 10 and has her Masters in Theology from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family. She has written a soon to be published book with the working title Supernatural Family Planning, the Original Method. Anne continues our Quest for a better understanding of the Church’s teaching on “family planning” and our responsibility in that area of life.
Anne is thus our 4th Guest in the recent past to treat the subject of NFP, following Fr William Gardner–pastor for Diocese of Peoria, Dr Jay Boyd–Developmental Psychologist and Catholic blogger from Oregon, and Kim Cole–long-time teacher of the Ovulation Method in Colorado Springs.
Today, we complete the two-part series on the Diocese of Phoenix, with Mike Phelan, Director of Marriage and Family Life. Last week at this time, I was in Phoenix and you heard my interview of Dr Clint Leonard, an NFP-Only Ob/Gyn who practices in a Phoenix suburb. He is a great witness to the beauty and efficacy of authentic Catholic health care. If you missed the program, you can listen to the recording at radiomaria.us/questforlife by going to our archives for 11 December.
Mike has a great personal story of following God’s plan for his life by moving his family to Washington DC to attend the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family. He took a leap of faith–“be not afraid”–and great things happened, in his family and in the Diocese of Phoenix.
Mike will tell us “his story” and how the Diocese of Phoenix has come to be recognized as having one of the most progressive marriage preparation programs in the the country–envied and emulated by many other dioceses.
