Catholic Kaleidoscope Beginning Oct. 19

Alyssa BormesRadio Maria will introduce a new program on Sunday, October 19, 2014. Catholic Kaleidoscope, hosted by Alyssa Bormes, will be airing at 1:00 p.m. Central/2:00 p.m. Eastern. Alyssa holds a Masterā€™s degree in Catholic Studies from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She is the author of The Catechism of Hockey, in which she uses the metaphor of hockey and sports devotion to explain the responsibility of Catholic parents to raise their children in the teachings of the Church. Currently, she is the Assistant to the President of The American Chesterton Society. In her spare time, she is a popular speaker and retreat leader on a range of Catholic topics, and is known for her gift of igniting a newfound sense of wonder in the church using storytelling, humor and analogy. Alyssa truly has a ā€œkaleidoscopeā€ of gifts to offer our Radio Maria listeners.
You will be able to find archives of the program at: http://radiomaria.us/catholickaleidoscope/

April 1, 2014 – Katherine Ginkel

Katherine Ginkel has a unique job as educator of St Jude Hospice staff personnel on the Ethical and Religious Directives (ERDs) for Catholic Health Care Workers. These Directives were developed by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops to set a standard of care that is to be expected by all Catholic health care institutions and their employees and associates. These ERDs are periodically updated to reflect the ever changing threats to the dignified treatment and care of those who are in need of care in clinics, hospitals and in all critical and end-of-life care situations. For example, the ERDs absolutely forbid abortion and euthanasia.

The hospice industry is not always respectful of the dignity of human persons and their right to a natural death. Hospice care can be on opportunity for euthanasia as we reported in one of last year’s “The Quest for a Culture of Life in America” programs. The vocabulary now includes the phrase “stealth euthanasia” to describe the over dosing of pain medications to cause death.

St Jude Hospice was started by Tom Moreland as an authentically Catholic (loyal to Church teaching as reflected in the ERDs) alternative to secular hospice. In 2008, Tom started Saint Jude Healthcare, which eventually became the parent to Saint Jude Hospice and Spirit Homecare. Tom managed or owned hospices from Ohio to Mississippi, and Minnesota to California. There are now 13 St Jude Hospice locations in Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. Tom has requests from several bishops to open new locations in their dioceses.

August 27, 2013 – Sr. Candice Fier

I am on a pilgrimage this week-a pilgrimage visiting Schoenstatt Shrines in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and meeting the religious and laity who are the Schoenstatt Family. Sister Candice Fier is a Schoenstatt Movement Religious Sister. I was surprised to know of their large numbers and the variety of their ministries. Sister lives at the Sleepy Eye MN Shrine and Retreat Center, and serves the Diocese of New Ulm as Family Life Director. She is a Registered Nurse and Fertility Care Practitioner with an MS in Marriage and Family Life from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in WDC.
Today we will learn about Sr Candice-her origins, call to religious life, and the three prongs of her ministry:
Promotion of NFP and Natural Procreative Technology for healthy marriages and healthy women,
Marriage and Family Life projects in a large rural Midwestern diocese, and the
Schoenstatt movement mission and charisma based on a deep love of Mary.
